EastEnders has confirmed that Danniella Westbrook will reprise the role of Sam Mitchell in time for the exit of screen mum Peggy.
Westbrook made her Walford debut back in 1990 and hasn’t been seen as Sam since 2009. Now, though, she is set to make a reappearance as actress Barbara Windsor makes her final exit from the BBC soap.
“I’m really excited to be going back to EastEnders. It feels right the Mitchells are all back for Peggy’s funeral and I can’t wait to work alongside everyone again,” the 42-year-old star said.
Upcoming episodes of EastEnders will also see the return of Ross Kemp as Grant Mitchell for the first time in a decade.
Since leaving EastEnders, Westbrook – who also hit the headlines for a much-reported cocaine addiction in the 1990s – went on to feature in I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!, Hollyoaks, Dancing on Ice and the latest series of Celebrity Big Brother, where she finished in fifth place.
Speaking about Westbrook’s EastEnders comeback, executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins told the Sunday Mirror: “It is only right that all of Peggy Mitchell’s children would be at her funeral. Danniella is the final piece of the Mitchell jigsaw puzzle, so it will be great for viewers to see Phil, Grant and Sam all back on screen.
“Sam will only be back for a few episodes, but these scenes are bound to go down in the soap’s history.”
