Replacing the rather enjoyable Jekyll & Hyde, ITV’s latest drama series Beowulf: Return To The Shieldlands was, for many, a huge disappointment.
The 13-part series, tipped to be ITV’s answer to the global phenomenon that is Game Of Thrones, had a budget of £17m, and is full of magic and monsters. Yet, despite ticking off many of the requirements for a successful fantasy series, viewers took to social media after the first episode aired on Sunday to voice their displeasure.
One Twitter user wrote:
“Beowulf was a bit pants.”
Another expressed what many were thinking by posting:
“What a disappointment that was.”

Other than how overall disappointing the show was, another talking point proved to be the amount of product some actors had in their hair.
I think the entire budget for beowulf has been spent on hair gel. #BeowulfITV

Despite the criticisms, Kevin Bew who plays the title role in the show, believes the programme is of a high standard, saying:
“Beowulf is going to be thrilling entertainment. This show is not elitist or overly earnest, we want families to enjoy it. We’ve filmed very ambitious stunts and fight sequences with all these scary beasts. There’s conflict, love interest and almost a Wild West feel in some respects.”
Beowulf: Return To The Shieldlands airs Sundays at 7pm on ITV.
