REVIEW: YUNGBLUD – ‘THE UNDERRATED YOUTH’ EP 0 46

In the past few years, Yungblud – AKA Dominic Richard Harrison – has earned himself an all but cult following and racked up millions of streams on several streaming platforms and his latest release, ‘The Underrated Youth’ EP is almost certain to earn him more.

While some artists in the industry prefer to play by the rules, Yungblud isn’t afraid to speak his mind and, as he did on his debut album ’21st Century Liability’, he’s done so again on this new collection, only this time, his messages are clearer and sharper than ever before.

Opening track “Braindead” gets things off to a fantastic start and will go down a storm with anyone who is a fan of indie-rock and bands such as Arctic Monkeys. Next up is “Parents”, – all but a slamming of those who refuse to take people like himself and younger generations seriously – followed by newest single “Original Me”, which features Imagine Dragons’ Dan Reynolds and is practically bursting with how much electro-rock is in it – and that’s not a bad thing, btw. It’s also a highlight of the EP, and is testament to just how gifted a lyricist Yungblud is. He isn’t afraid to set out his thoughts and feelings on the page, and then on a record and, as a song written about the negative sides of mental health and how it can leave you feeling like you’re not as good or worthy of good things in your life as others, “Original Me” has and will continue to hit close to home for and connect with a lot of people who hear it.

The track from which the EP’s title is taken meanwhile, “Hope For The Underrated Youth” is almost certainly set to become an anthem for his fans and indeed young people all over the country, if not the world, as we all look towards the future. Yungblud is optimistic of said future – one which as he addresses so brilliantly in the song, will be changed and shaped by those individuals of his generation.

While Yungblud’s debut album proved and showcased his talent and made thousands upon thousands of people sit up and take note of him, the strength of ‘The Underrated Youth’ as a whole means it deserves to go one better and turn this gifted young man – someone who is already a voice for the misplaced, the ignored and the “different” – into a performer the world should listen to.

NEW MYTHS UNVEIL THEIR COVER OF EMF’S CLASSIC “UNBELIEVABLE” 0 66

Since making their mark on the music scene back in 2012, New Rock rock trio Myths have gone on to achieve a strong following of fans and support from radio stations – including BBC Radio 6 – and publications on both sides of the Atlantic.

Their live shows, including those at festivals such as SXSW, have seen them wow audiences of all sizes and perform alongside the likes of B-52’s singer Cindy Wilson and earlier this year they headed out on the road as support for The Joy Formidable.

More recently, as they prepare to release their sophomore album, New Myths recorded a cover of the EMF track “Unbelievable”, which they’ve chosen to release as a single, and ThisIsTheLatest are delighted to host its premiere.

While the original version is an up-tempo classic, The New Myths rework presents “Unbelievable” in a whole new way, and has the group put their own unique twist on a track that remains one of the most popular of the 90’s.

Asked how and why they chose to cover the track, the trio said:

“We were in the studio recording new original tracks and decided we wanted to try a cover which we hadn’t done yet. We couldn’t seem to agree on anything but then when Brit brought up “Unbelievable” we were all in agreement that we all love the song and we also wanted to cover a song that we could completely change up and make our own. Once we decided to slow down, reharmonize, and grunge-ify “Unbelievable,” we were all super down and really into it.”
