This episode of Scandal was just as fast paced as the last; it features new dirt coming out about Fitz’s days as California governor, and a whole lot more.
The episode opens with Fitz and Olivia arguing in a hotel room due to her selected boyfriend, Jake, as her ‘fake’ boyfriend at Mellie’s request so the media stay off the reports of an affair. This is a very different sight of their relationship from the start of last week’s episode when Olivia and Fitz were making out happily when Mellie walked in on them. They are fighting because Fitz can’t trust Jake around Olivia, “He has become compromised.”
However, reporter Carla has learned that drugs were being used within the Governor’s quarters during Fitz’s time as the head of California. Olivia wants to deny these reports, but new VP candidate Andrew says the reports are valid. Pope and Associates start working to cover up the drug problem for Andrew explains that he needed pain relievers for bad back pain and didn’t want to go to a doctor because he was campaigning against drugs at the time.
Who is behind Carla’s search? Olivia thinks it was her father, who wants to sabotage Fitz’s campaign. She calls Jake at once, calling for help in seeing if it was him. Jake asks Charlie to dig into it.
Later on in the episode, the drug story is sorted out and is called off when the source gets discredited (though it wasn’t) Olivia knows it was Mellie who was at the centre of that story and tries to sympathize with Mellie, who doesn’t want any of it, and points out how Olivia doesn’t know what it’s like to really say no to a man.
There was a moment of father/daughter bonding between Olivia and Rowan Pope at a restaurant and asks about the threat against the President. On her way out, Olivia spots Quinn spying on her (Quinn had been spying on Charlie at first, who had been spying on Rowan following Jake’s orders) Olivia lectures Quinn in the car and invites her back to the team, but she says she can’t see Huck again (He licked my face) Olivia pleads with her, but Quinn pulls a fun on her forcing Olivia to leave her car. Olivia yells at Jake for putting Quinn on her father, which Jake denies he did so. While he’s visiting her place, he complains that if he’s going to be the fake boyfriend, he wants food in the fridge, then he goes to get ready for real sex with his fake girlfriend.
Jake yells at Quinn because he doesn’t think she is capable of being in his organisation, but Quinn backs up her prowess for she shows evidence – photographical evidence – of Rowan and Leo Bergen – meeting which means trouble and went undetected within B613.
At the top of the episode Mellie meets with VP candidate Andrew, who appears interested in getting back with her. In the flashback, fourteen years ago, Mellie and Fitz are arguing for Mellie won’t let Fitz touch her following his father raping her, Andrew overhears this and sees her as she storms out. Later, Andrew finds Mellie passed out on the floor after overdoing on prescription pills for it was an attempted suicide, later on there’s another flashback with Fitz being away, Mellie turns down Andrew’s advances and imparts on him the reason behind her attempted suicide. It turns out that they never had an affair after all, but her loyalty to Fitz doesn’t last that long for Mellie and Andrew meet again, they talk for a bit then make out. Mellie quickly regrets this and runs out of the room.
Mama Pope returns for Harrison talks with Adnan Salif after an evening spent romantically together. Adnan appears at the Grant Campaign HQ and talks to Cyrus and wants to help them out, at first we don’t understand this until the end of the episode when it was revealed that it was Olivia’s mother that is pulling the strings, but what is their intentions?
Pubilus was almost revealed when James is afraid that Cyrus is going to find out that Pubilus is actually him. James and David meet up to discuss this and makes a meeting with Vanessa, but David goes in James’ place, but he’s kidnapped right before meeting the reporter. Was it Cyrus’ guy that took him? He calls Abby to her that he loves her, the car stops and it is revealed to be Abby and Huck who grabbed him so he wouldn’t get caught.
Meanwhile, we see that Jake has the highest security access that is higher than the President’s. He hears Olivia tell Fitz that she’s not sure about her feelings for Jake (this one of many cliff hangers) Huck apologises to Olivia with numerous amounts of coffee even though Olivia doesn’t drink it, where words are said to Olivia about Huck’s behaviour and the reasons why he did what he did to Quinn.
